Darryl Lee Jr., of Kankakee, is accused in the Oct. 22 early morning attack that left one person dead and another person hospitalized. New details reveal that the victim, identified as 52-year-old Tracey Land of Bridgeview, was delivering food to the restaurant located in the 2700 block of Route 34 when Lee allegedly broke in around 3:10 a.m. An attack with a hammer and knife followed, according to police.

Police further allege that Lee attempted to clean up the crime scene after killing Land.

Two maintenance workers, a son and a mother, were outside the restaurant, unaware of the brutal slaying that occurred inside, according to police. Lee eventually exited the restaurant just before 5 a.m. and attacked the male worker from behind by stabbing him with a knife.

Despite suffering an injury, police say the 20-year-old subdued Lee with the help of his mother. Arriving officers encountered a restrained Lee and placed him into custody. Officers then rendered medical aid to the injured 20-year-old worker.

Following transport to a nearby hospital, the 20-year-old worker remains in stable condition, police said. Officers would discover the deceased body of Land after speaking with Lee, police added.

All told, Kendall County prosecutors charged Lee with eleven felony counts in connection with the attack, including charges of:

  • First-degree murder
  • Attempted first-degree murder
  • Concealment of homicidal death
  • Aggravated battery
  • Armed robbery
  • Armed violence
  • Burglary

“This was an unprovoked attack and resulted in a tragic loss of life. Our hearts go out to the victims, their families, and everyone affected by this tragic incident,” said Oswego Police Chief Bastin. “We are grateful for the bravery of those who intervened and for the coordinated response from our officers, fire personnel, and assisting agencies.”

Lee remains behind bars at Kendall County Jail. He is due in court on Friday, Oct. 24.
