Player of the Week: Bossier’s Montrevell Lewis

BOSSIER CITY, LA (KTAL/KMSS) — It takes a special amount of skill to play quarterback in high school, especially when you’ve played limited snaps. For Bossier Bearkats quarterback Montrevell Lewis, he’s made the job look easy. The sophomore accomplished something that hasn’t been done in over two decades.

“He’s just an athlete, you know, he’s just one of those guys, that we’re glad he’s a Bossier Bearcat, that’s for sure,” head coach of the Bearkats Gary Smith said.

That’s to say the least.

Last Friday against Northwood, Lewis surpassed 1,000 passing and rushing yards this season, joining Southwood’s Frankie Gatson, who did the same in 2004.

“It feels good you know, because a lot of people ain’t did that before, and like I wasn’t supposed to be there because I was supposed to be playing receiver,” Lewis said.

The craziest part, Lewis is a former receiver who turned quarterback.

“We had some injuries last year and he had to step in at quarterback from receiver, so he started a few games for us at quarterback last year, but the passing threat was not there last year. So that’s something he’s definitely improved on, but he went through the entire spring and summer with 7 on 7 and never took any reps at quarterback,” Smith said. “So week one we kind of got in a bind and hey, let’s get Montrevell in there and see what happens, and he just took off.”

Yeah, he has taken off, 1,140 yards and 22 touchdowns on the ground alone. Lewis gives his flowers to the play calling of offensive coordinator Jeff Harper.

“It’s good, you know, because Coach Harper, he’s smart, so he make it real easy,” Lewis stated.

“Coach Harper’s done a good job with Montrevell and, you know, he’s 90% of our offense and so like you said, you got to build around him. The O’line has done a good job, the receivers have done a good job,” Smith said.

That confidence starts with their belief in the young playmaker.

“I feel good because they trust me a lot,” Lewis said.

“He’s gotten better each week and that’s what I guess I’m most proud of because he’s taking the coaching and he’s, you know, he’s focused and locked in pretty much every day of practice and he’s been doing a great job with that,” Smith stated.

Lewis and the Bearkats hit the field again on Friday, October 24 against Minden.
