Former Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron running for lieutenant governor

ALABAMA (WHNT) – Former University of Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron announced Thursday that he would be running for lieutenant governor.

McCarron was with the Tide from 2009 to 2013, winning back-to-back national championships under coach Nick Saban. He then went onto a career in the NFL, where he played for teams like the Cincinnati Bengals, the Buffalo Bills and the Houston Texans. He ended his playing career last year in the UFL, where he played for the St. Louis Battlehawks.

“With my football career behind me, Katherine and I are raising our boys here, instilling in them our deep Christian faith and teaching them the fundamental morals that make this state so special,” McCarron said in his announcement video.

McCarron has also been involved in several business ventures, such as AJian, a sushi restaurant in Tuscaloosa that adopted the food model of letting customers build their own sushi rolls with unusual items, such as Cheetos.

During his campaign announcement, McCarron cited conservative firebrand Charlie Kirk’s death as his reason “to get off the sidelines, and get into the game and stand tall” for Conservative beliefs.

McCarron is married to model Katherine Webb, with whom he has three sons.

McCarron is joining current Secretary of State Wes Allen, Cullman County Deputy Patrick Bishop, George Childress, Pastor Dean Odle, Agriculture Commissioner Rick Pate and economist Nicole Wadsworth in the race for this position.

The primary will be held May 19, 2026 while the general election will be November 3, 2026.
