Calm, mostly sunny Thursday in Bay Area

(BCN) — Thursday in the Bay Area calls for pleasant conditions and mostly sunny skies, with cloud cover in some areas, according to the National Weather Service.

Daytime highs will be in the mid 60s to low 70s on the coast, high 60s to low 70s around the bay, and low to mid 70s inland. Overnight lows will be in the low to mid 50s, with some interior areas dropping into upper 40s.

The Bay Area is in for a calm and pleasant Thursday as a shortwave ridge brings dry and stable weather across the region, according to the NWS.

Forecasters say mostly clear skies overnight will give way to patches of low clouds and fog by sunrise as the marine layer reforms. Those clouds are expected to clear by late morning, leading to a sunny afternoon with light winds and comfortable temperatures.

Meanwhile, the NWS has issued a Beach Hazards Statement from late Thursday night through Sunday night for the San Francisco and Monterey Bay coasts, warning of large waves and dangerous surf conditions. A moderate to long-period northwesterly swell is expected to bring breaking waves of 15 to 20 feet, with some spots — such as Point Reyes and Big Sur — seeing waves as high as 25 feet.

The high surf is expected to increase the risk of sneaker waves and powerful rip currents, especially near piers, inlets and rocky areas. Beachgoers are urged to stay off rocks and jetties, keep a safe distance from the surf zone, and never turn their back on the ocean.
