Officers from the Fullerton Police Department were called to the apartment building in the 140 block of Wilshire Avenue just after 11 a.m. Tuesday.
“The Fullerton Police Department’s Communication Center received a 9-1-1 call from a male reporting that four of his friends had overdosed and were not breathing,” police said in a statement.
Upon arrival, police and paramedics found four adults dead inside, authorities confirmed.
While officials did not immediately state what caused the deaths, they indicated there was no threat to the public. Preliminary information suggests all four may have died due to a drug overdose.
A friend of the teammates told KTLA on Tuesday night that all of them were on the same softball team and had come to the apartment to hang out with another teammate when the tragedy occurred.
Some of their loved ones were seen crying when detectives informed them of the news. Area residents, including one man who brought his family to the city’s bustling downtown for a night out, called the news “disturbing.”
“Usually downtown Fullerton is a safe environment, with families coming out here for happy hour — that’s the reason why we were out here,” said William Gomez. “To hear news like this in our community. … It’s disturbing.”
None of the four people who died had been publicly identified as of Wednesday morning.
