Winn-Dixie to close over 30 grocery stores in 5 states

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (WRBL) — Southeastern Grocers (SEG), the company responsible for grocery stores Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket, has announced it will close several stores in Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana by the end of 2025.

As a part of a company “refocusing,” SEG said Tuesday it will “transition ownership of most of its locations outside of Florida.”

“For a century, Winn-Dixie has proudly called Florida home,” said Chairman and CEO of SEG Anthony Hucker. “As we enter our next century as The Winn-Dixie Company — a brand-new 100-year-old company — we are accelerating growth where our roots run deepest while staying true to our purpose of feeding and enriching the communities, families and neighbors who have supported us for generations.”

The renamed company now plans to shutter 32 Winn-Dixie stores and eight Harveys Supermarkets in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, and Mississippi before the end of the year.

Some of these locations have already been claimed by other grocers. Piggly Wiggly plans to operate the Harveys store in Swainsboro, Georgia, and the Winn-Dixie in Prattville, Alabama. Food City is set to take over three Alabama Winn-Dixie locations: Fultondale, Trussville, and Jasper. Super 1 Foods intends to occupy two Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Winn-Dixie stores, located on Siegen Lane and Coursey Boulevard.

The Winn-Dixie Company said its footprint will soon cover roughly 130 grocery stores as well as 140 “freestanding and grocery-adjacent liquor stores.” Remodels are underway or planned at dozens of locations, and the grocer plans to pilot a new third-party delivery and return kiosks.

In 2023, discount grocer Aldi announced it planned to buy 400 Winn-Dixie and Harveys stores as part of an expansive growth plan. Some of those locations are still converting to Aldi stores, more than two years after plans were revealed.
