Turkey vultures and black vultures are the two species of vultures found in Virginia. Recently, the VDWR reports a number of dead vultures infected with avian flu have been found around the commonwealth, including in southwest Virginia.

If you find dead vultures, alone or in a group, you are advised to contact the VDWR. That way wildlife managers can take steps to contain the spread.
Domesticated poultry flocks have been hit hard by avian flu. The primary means of transmission is from wild birds into domesticated flocks. You are also asked to report other bird kills, as well.
While it is rare, avian flu can be spread to humans. If you find dead birds, do not touch them, but call the VDWR and your local health department.
