TOOELE COUNTY, Utah (ABC4) — A Florida man has been charged with manslaughter for allegedly causing the death of another driver in 2023.

Yuchan Fan, 35, of Gainesville, FL, is charged with one count of manslaughter, a second-degree felony, and one count of reckless driving, a Class B misdemeanor.

According to Lt. Cameron Roden with the Utah Highway Patrol (UHP), on Dec. 19, 2023, two vehicles were traveling eastbound on I-80 near mile marker 64. A Chevy Malibu was driving in the left lane, and a Dodge Ram was in the right lane.

UHP reported that the Chevy swerved to avoid something in the roadway, striking the Dodge and causing it to leave the roadway and roll. The Chevy crossed into oncoming traffic and then off the other side of the road, hitting a fence.

Court documents indicate that the speed limit in the area was 80 miles per hour, but the Chevy driver — now identified as Fan — was allegedly travelling at 111 miles per hour.

The driver of the Dodge was airlifted to the hospital with critical injuries, UHP says. Fan had possible injuries but was not transported to the hospital, and two passengers from his vehicle were uninjured.

Ultimately, the other driver involved passed away as a result of the accident, according to documents.

Documents indicate that Fan is not currently in custody, but a summons will be issued for him to appear in court. An initial court appearance is set for Nov. 11, 2025.

This is a developing story. ABC4 will update this post as more information becomes available.
