Community Corrections director explains what led to escape attempt by convicted felon
The agency is also reviewing its policies to make sure a similar escape attempt doesn’t happen again.
Pulling up to a gate outside the Criminal Justice Campus, just after 11 a.m. Tuesday, 35-year-old Diontae Green jumped out of a transport van and ran away with his hands and feet shackled.
That escape surprised even Green’s own mother.
“I just don’t understand. My heart is troubled,” said Linda Green.
The suspect’s mother says she talked to her son just an hour before the escape. He was being held on work release at the Duvall Residential Center following a conviction on a weapons charge and didn’t know he was going back to jail.
“If he had known, he would have said, ‘Mom, they’re going to violate me.’ He had no clue at all,” Linda said.
While Green does have a criminal history and is considered a serious violent felon, Linda hopes people don’t judge him too harshly.
According to a violation notice, Green violated his probation on Sunday when he got a pass to go to a CVS on Keystone, but returned hours later without his medication.
That violation resulted in an arrest warrant being issued for Green.
According to court records, after more than 4 hours of searching on Tuesday, Green was re-arrested, hiding under a bridge not far from the jail.
“Jumping out of a van is not the norm. Usually, if someone wants to abscond from our program, they just don’t show up,” said the executive director of Marion County Community Corrections, Scott Hohl.
Unlike the sheriff’s office, Community Corrections does not use specialty vans to transport offenders, but instead uses standard passenger vans.
“To be honest, we don’t do a lot of transports to the detention center. More often, we’re transporting people to events where they’re helping with community service,” Hohl said.
Hohl admits the officer transporting Green notified a supervisor, but not the jail, leading to a delay in searching for the suspect.
That’s a policy they plan to address with their employees.
“He kind of went out of order with his notifications. First call should have gone to sheriff’s dispatch to notify them of the escape,” Hohl said.
Green is now being held for 7 days at the jail without bond.
He’s due in court later this week.
In addition to speaking about the incident on camera, Hohl issued the following timeline and statement on the escape:
On 10/21/2025, a violation was filed on Mr. Green with the court for violating the rules of his work release sentence at Duvall Residential Center. This was not a new criminal offense, but for not following the rules and expectations of his placement in work release.
At approximately 11:03 am, Community Corrections transported Mr. Green to the Adult Detention Center for an active warrant that had been issued as a result of the violation being filed. At approximately 11:15 am, the transport arrived at the first gate outside the sally port at the Criminal Justice Center (CJC).
While contacting the CJC officer at the gate, Mr. Green opened the vehicle door and jumped out of the van. It should be noted, Mr. Green was being transported in full trip gear, meaning that both his hands and feet were handcuffed. Although these restraints restrict movement, individuals are still able move. Additionally, Marion County Community Corrections does not have the same transportation vans as the Marion County Sherriff.
Given the nature of our work, and the fact that the individuals we work with have lower-level offenses, our agency has basic passenger vans. Transports to the Adult Detention Center are not common, and we more often utilize these vans to transport individuals to events or locations where we are assisting with community service.
Mr. Green ran into the woods and jumped into a gully. Staff radioed the escape and called control to inform Duvall Residential Center Management, at 11:34 am. At approximately 3:30pm, Mr. Green was in custody of the MCSO.
