CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WOWK) — Despite the federal shutdown, Saturday proved to be one of the biggest Bridge Days in West Virginia history.

According to a release from the Office of Governor Patrick Morrisey, more than 120,000 people showed up to the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve to watch and participate in the day’s festivities.

The release said nearly 400 BASE jumpers from 39 states and four countries dove off the 876-foot-high New River Gorge Bridge while 300 people rappelled and high-lined across the canyon. One veteran even made the jump at the young age of 78.

Accompanying the thrill-seekers were 500 runners from 26 states who were participating in the Bridge Day 5K. Meanwhile, more than 200 vendors set up along the span to make the most of the opportunity.

“Bridge Day is a great opportunity for West Virginia to showcase its amazing natural beauty and outdoor recreation with the world,” Gov. Morrisey said. “This incredible event wouldn’t have been possible without the hard work and dedication of so many wonderful people.”

The day was almost canceled due to the federal shutdown, but a signed donor agreement from the National Park Service allowed West Virginia to keep its national parks open throughout October.

In the release, Gov. Morrisey gave credit to the Bridge Day Commission, Department of Highways, Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, local Emergency Medical Services, National Guard, National Park Service, New  River Gorge Convention and Visitors Bureau, West Virginia State Police, and Visit Southern West Virginia Convention and Visitors Bureau and many others for the success of the events.
