The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says traffic crashes are a leading cause of death for teens 15 to 18 years old.
Fresno Police recommend parents have conversations with their teens about the dangers of risky driving.
“I just encourage all parents to have the difficult talk with your children regarding driving and to get rid of all the distractions that are out there,” McCray said.
Michael McCray says un-safe behaviors include speeding, texting, and driving under the influence.
Fresno Police are conducting a traffic safety operation this weekend, focusing on teen drivers.
“We just want to make sure you’re safe and you’re doing what you’re supposed to be doing. And as a young driver, it’s so important for you to establish the right driving habits from a very young age,” Mccray said.
AAA Mountain West Group Spokesperson John Treanor says it’s important to practice safe driving habits.
“Go over scenarios with their kid in a safe environment, go to that parking lot or that empty lot or that street that you know, is going to be safe to drive in and have them really, really practice,” Treanor said.
Being aware of pedestrians and other drivers is also key to preventing deaths.
“A lot can happen in front of you. Just pay attention if you look forward and don’t look down at your phone or what’s going on behind you in the car, you will be a safer driver by just doing that,” Treanor said.
Teen driver safety week runs Oct. 19 through 25.
