Suspect charged with 8 felonies after 3-year-old boy seriously injured in east Charlotte parking lot shooting: CMPD
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WJZY) – An arrest was made after a 3-year-old boy was seriously hurt in a weekend shooting in the parking lot of an apartment complex, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police.

The incident happened around 8:15 p.m. on October 19 in the 5700 block of Sloping Oaks Road. CMPD officers said someone fired into an occupied vehicle, damaging the car and leaving the young child seriously injured. The vehicle sustained an estimated $10,000 in damages.

A Huntersville man, identified as 39-year-old James Raeford, was arrested a few hours later and charged with eight felonies:

  • Assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill;
  • Assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill or inflict serious injuries;
  • Six counts of discharging a firearm into an occupied property

Two other people were also listed as victims in the police report: a 29-year-old man who was threatened with a gun, and a 37-year-old man who was not hurt.

Investigators said the victims did not know the suspect. Raeford is being held in the Mecklenburg County jail without bond.
