Heavy police presence at NBA YoungBoy concert in New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Lines of green formed outside the Smoothie King Center for Louisiana native NBA YoungBoy’s second performance in New Orleans.

Fans from both in and out of the state came to see him.

“We’re very excited to be here. We’re from Jackson, Mississippi. So, a three-hour road trip. Very excited to be here,” Brian Martin said.

“I’m really excited, baby. Really excited,” Devionna Williams said.

“One of the best times in my life, you heard me?” Devin Williams said.

While the concerts can be fun, they also have a reputation of being controversial with violent incidents having occurred at some of his concerts in the past.

Hundreds of New Orleans Police Department officers and Louisiana State Police troopers have been stationed around the center.

“It seems like a lot like, but year, it might keep some of the violence and stuff down,” Shirley Chiasson said.

“I hope it ain’t no violence. Some people do cut up, so I really hope it ain’t no violence, you know?” Devionna Williams said.

The Louisiana State Police say this extra presence of troopers helped lead to the arrest of five people during a reckless driving incident on Sunday.

The troopers seized four ATV’s, two dirt bikes, one motorcycle and three firearms.

Some concert goers say the sheer number of on-duty officers was not needed.

“I mean, I feel like this was unnecessary, but hey,” Ariel Daniels said.

“I feel like 400 is a lot. 400 Is a lot, but they being safe though,” Camyra Venivle said.

According to the NOPD, officers responded to reports of shots fired inside the Smoothie King Arena the night of the concert; however, indications are that this was a false alarm.

Officers responded immediately and made sure the area was secure.
