Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana is helping provide food for federal employees who don’t know when their next paycheck will arrive.
Approximately 24,000 Hoosiers work for the federal government to provide important services through the TSA, FAA, Social Security and more. On top of that, 1,100 Hoosiers serve in the active-duty military. Many of them will also stop receiving pay this month.
Fred Glass, president and CEO of Gleaners, said the food bank has reached out to all impacted agencies to offer its support, and has already partnered with TSA at the Indianapolis International Airport. They now have special food distributions regularly.
“Right next door at the Indianapolis Airport — we talked to their leadership and offered a program where they can have their own individualized food distribution system, their own food. We fulfill the orders and they pick it up here,” Glass said.
According to Glass, of the approximately 350 TSA employees, 225 have signed up for the program.
“I think that shows the depth of how people are being hurt here and now. People who never thought in a million years they would ever turn to the charitable food system for support. The vast majority of them are making use of this program,” Glass said.
Glass also said pantries like Gleaners are not allowed to ask the federal government for the food they normally receive through the Emergency Food Assistance Program, impacting rural families.
Funding for the WIC and SNAP programs is expected to run out at the end of this month, programs that Glass said hundreds of thousands of Hoosiers rely on.
He respectfully called on lawmakers to come to a decision soon, as the need for food continues to rise.
