Freeport Senior Resource Center hosts expo to help older adults live independently

FREEPORT, Ill. (WTVO) — The Senior Resource Center is hosting a free Senior Expo in Freeport this week, aimed at assisting older adults and their caregivers with resources to help them live independently.

The event will take place at the Eagles Club and features over 50 vendors covering a wide range of topics relevant to seniors, including Medicare, independent living, and health classes. Free health screenings such as flu shots, glucose, and cholesterol tests will also be available.

“It’s really about providing kind of a one-stop shop for older adults and really for their caregivers,” said Anne Marie Walker, Marketing Community Engagement Director at the Senior Resource Center. “The whole purpose is so that older adults age well and can live independently in their homes as long as possible.”

The expo will also address challenges faced by seniors, such as technology use and mobility. By centralizing resources and information under one roof, the event aims to reduce stress for seniors and provide them with face-to-face interactions with vendors.

Walker highlighted the importance of the event’s timing, noting that it comes just before the holiday season. “As people get together over the holidays, you may start to see some changes in your parent,” she said.

The event is designed to be accessible, with printed materials available for attendees to take home and review at their leisure. This ensures that seniors have the information they need even after the event concludes.

By offering a comprehensive range of resources and screenings, the Senior Expo aims to support seniors in maintaining their independence and well-being. The event is free and open to the public, providing an invaluable opportunity for seniors and their families to connect with essential services. It will be held Thursday, October 23 from 9am-12pm at the Eagles Club, 1200 W. Galena Avenue.
