Our guest on this episode of Big Country Conversations is Mary Adcock from the Ballinger Area Chamber of Commerce. Mary wears several hats in the beautiful small city of Ballinger, including serving as Public Relations and Marketing Director for the Ballinger Memorial Hospital District.

On the podcast, Mary shares what’s happening around Ballinger this fall and through the holiday season — starting with the Annual Hunter’s Dinner on November 1, a nearly 40-year tradition that honors hunters with a night of great BBQ, exciting auction items, and plenty of fun.

Hunting plays an important role in rural Texas communities like Ballinger — not just as a pastime, but as a way of life that connects people to the land, their neighbors, and longstanding traditions. For many families, hunting season is as significant as any holiday, bringing generations together to share stories, skills, and a respect for wildlife. Beyond its cultural value, hunting also has a real economic impact: it supports local businesses from feed stores to diners, outfitters, and taxidermists, and it draws visitors who contribute to small-town economies. In places like Ballinger, hunting represents stewardship, community, and continuity — values that define rural Texas itself. This is what the Hunter’s Dinner is all about.

The conversation then turns to Christmas in Olde Ballinger on Saturday, November 29, another beloved community tradition. This all-day celebration features sidewalk shopping, food trucks, and a spectacular evening parade complete with floats — and, of course, a special appearance by Santa and Mrs. Claus.

At the heart of the festivities is Santa’s Village, open from noon to 5:00 p.m., offering free activities for kids and the young at heart. It’s the perfect place to meet Santa before the parade, enjoy crafts, and listen to story time — one of the best-loved traditions of Christmas in Olde Ballinger.

Join us for this episode of Big Country Conversations as we preview a fantastic destination within easy driving distance from anywhere in the Big Country and the Heartland — and a perfect spot to experience the warmth, charm, and community spirit that make Ballinger such a special place.
