2 UNC Health physicians elected to National Academy of Medicine

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WNCN) — Two physicians at the UNC Health system have been elected to the National Academy of Medicine, officials said Monday.

Dr. Robert Ferris, the UNC Health chief of oncology clinical services, and Dr. Samantha Meltzer-Brody, the executive dean of the UNC School of Medicine, were the only physicians in North Carolina elected to the academy this year, according to health system officials.

According to UNC Health officials, election to the National Academy of Medicine recognizes those “who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service”. Current members elect the new members based on their medical sciences, health care, and public health contributions.

UNC Health officials said Ferris, who is the executive director of the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center and the N.C. Basnight Cancer Center, changed clinical practice for head and neck cancer therapies, got PD-1 immunotherapy approved by the FDA, and changed the National Comprehensive Cancer Network guidelines through the reduction of postoperative chemotherapy and radiotherapy after robotic surgery.

Meltzer-Brody, who was named the UNC School of Medicine executive dean in January, led international study of the genetics found in perinatal mood disorders and led trials demonstrating the ability of the only FDA-approved treatment for postpartum depression to achieve its desired results, according to UNC Health officials.

“We are so proud of Dr. Ferris and Dr. Meltzer-Brody for their work and dedication to conducting and fostering cutting-edge research, improving care for patients, and educating the next generation of physicians,” said Dr. Cristy Page, the interim CEO of UNC Health and Dean of the UNC School of Medicine, in a statement

“In addition, their leadership has helped further the mission of UNC Health and UNC School of Medicine by expanding oncology and psychiatric access and care for patients across North Carolina and beyond,” Page continued in her statement.
