The item for an AI-focused new committee was approved unanimously after Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) President Ronnie Morris recommended it at an Oct. 14 board meeting. A roundtable was held in September at a New Orleans high school discussing how to get students ready for an AI-driven economy.
“Artificial intelligence is transforming every sector of society, and Louisiana must be proactive in preparing students to lead in this evolving landscape,” said Morris. “By establishing this committee, we are ensuring that our state’s policies, partnerships, and classroom practices align with the demands of tomorrow’s workforce.”
Morris appointed Louisiana Tech University President Dr. Jim Henderson as the chair of the committee.
“I am honored to be appointed by the Board to lead this important initiative,” said Henderson. “Artificial intelligence represents both a tremendous opportunity and a profound responsibility for education. Together, we will explore how Louisiana can harness AI to enhance teaching, empower students, and strengthen our state’s workforce for generations to come.”
The new BESE AI Committee will provide recommendations to BESE, including development of policy and implementation strategies, creation of a statewide AI literacy framework, the establishment of criteria for approved AI tools, and the identification of funding opportunities.
Committee findings and recommendations are scheduled to be reported to BESE on March 10.
