ILLINOIS (WTVO) — Illinois law enforcement agencies are set to receive over $11 million in grant funds to combat car theft, as announced by Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias.

The grants will be distributed among six agencies, including the Illinois State Police and the Illinois Statewide Auto Theft Task Force, to help prevent carjackings across the state.

“Whether you live in Belville, Champaign, Rockford, we have to do everything we can to combat the violent crimes that are carjackings,” said Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias.

Giannoulias emphasized the importance of recovering stolen vehicles, noting that people rely on their cars for essential daily activities such as commuting to work, taking children to daycare, and visiting the doctor.

The funding for these grants is sourced from car insurance companies, which contribute one dollar to the Secretary’s office for every car they insure in Illinois.
