Penn wins Indiana’s first-ever girls’ high school flag football championship game

INDIANAPOLIS — The first-ever Indiana girls’ high school flag football playoffs are in the books.

Penn High School, which is located in Mishawaka, won the state’s girls’ high school flag football championship game Saturday night. Penn beat Lawrence North High School, 35-12, at Grand Park Sports Campus in Westfield.

With the win, Penn finished its season 13-0. They beat Terre Haute South and Fort Wayne Snider in the first two rounds of the playoffs to advance to Saturday’s championship game.

According to a press release from the Indianapolis Colts, Penn averaged 42 points per game this season. Penn’s defense yielded just four points per game in 2025.

The Colts plan to honor the Penn girls’ flag football team at halftime of their game against the Tennessee Titans on Oct. 26.

The Colts have played a pivotal role in the growth of girls’ high school flag football in Indiana. The Colts first formed a girls’ flag football league in 2023.

At the time of its launch, the league had just eight teams. That league then expanded to 27 teams by 2024, which led IHSAA to label girls’ high school flag football as an “emerging sport.”

The Colts are currently running a campaign to help make girls’ flag football a sport that is officially sanctioned by the IHSAA. The Colts have invested $1 million in the initiative thus far to help schools that launch girls’ flag football teams cover up-front costs like equipment, uniforms, training and coaching stipends. The Colts indicated that such startup costs can run high schools between $5,000 and $8,000.

The Colts named their initiative the “Road to 100.” The campaign got its name because IHSAA rules mandate at least 100 schools be participating in a sport before it is officially sanctioned.

In 2025, 78 teams participated in the girls’ high school flag football season.

The Colts indicated that they are the first NFL franchise to offer free training to current and aspiring girls’ flag football officials.
