IMPD: Man killed in shooting on northeast side of Indianapolis
According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, around 1:45 p.m., officers were called to the 4200 block of Ponza Court — which is located near the intersection of 42nd Street and Post Road — to investigate a shooting. When police arrived at the scene, they located a man suffering from an apparent gunshot wound inside a residence.
Law enforcement rendered medical aid to the shooting victim until EMS personnel made it to the area. Medics pronounced the victim dead shortly after they arrived at the scene.
IMPD reported that it detained a person of interest during its investigation of the shooting. Police identified the person of interest as a man, though it is currently unclear what role, if any, he played in the shooting.
Police are also canvassing the area to try to speak with any individuals who may have witnessed the shooting.
Investigators believe they have identified all parties who may have been involved in the shooting. For that reason, police do not think the shooting poses any ongoing threat to the neighborhood.
IMPD’s detectives currently believe that, before the shooting happened, some sort of disturbance occurred inside the residence they found the victim dead in. Investigators are still working to determine how many people were inside that residence when the shooting unfolded.
IMPD has indicated that it is still working to obtain a warrant to search the residence the victim was killed in.
The Marion County Coroner’s Office and Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency are assisting IMPD with its investigation. MCCO will determine the decedent’s exact manner and cause of death. The coroner’s office will also publicly identify the victim once his family has been properly notified of his death.
Police are encouraging those with additional information on the shooting to contact detective Gregory Taylor at the IMPD Homicide Office by calling (317) 327-3475 or sending an email to Gregory.Taylor2@indy.gov.
Alternatively, tipsters who wish to remain anonymous can contact Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at (317) 262-8477.
