E-Lab first graders celebrate garden learning with Reader's Theatre
NATCHITOCHES, La. (KTAL/KMSS) — First graders at Northwestern State University Elementary Lab School showcased what they’ve learned about seeds and plant growth during a “Garden Adventure” Reader’s Theatre on October 17, 2025.
According to a news release, the W.I.N. enrichment group performed for parents, followed by a bucket drumming piece titled “Grow, Grow, Little Seed” and a brass-led parade through the school garden. Students sprouted kale seeds indoors, transplanted them outside, and later tasted kale chips they helped grow.
“Our students have become masters in seeds and making them grow,” said Lisa Wiggins, librarian and garden coordinator, in a news release. “We learn through reading and music. Music is magic.”
The school garden serves as an outdoor classroom, teaching science, math, and language arts while helping students understand where food comes from.
