HAMMOND, La. (Louisiana First) — Southeastern University is getting a new student media center, courtesy of one famous graduate, Robin Roberts. Her impact will continue at her alma mater.
Smiles lit up the faces of gospel singers, Roberts, and all in attendance to commemorate a very special day.
“I love this university, what it stands for, the people who came before me, and the ones who are here now. I love that we’ve created an atmosphere where you are rooted to rise, and that’s what happened for me,” Roberts said.
The Robin Roberts Broadcast Media Center includes film, TV, radio studios, and control and editing rooms.
“I’m incredibly proud that I was able to plant the seed, and how the state, how the legislature, and the governor really stepped up,” Roberts mentioned.
Tyler Thomas works for Southeastern University’s radio station, where Roberts also worked, and is inspired by her story.
“Bridging that gap between, you know, being a student athlete, while also making it all the way up the ladder, she rose it, time and time again, with a new position,” Thomas mentioned.
“It is a privilege, as you know, to be a messenger and to help people tell their stories,” Roberts declared.
The building where the Robin Roberts Media Center is located, D. Vickers Hall, was destroyed during Hurricane Ida in 2021.
