Retrospective Exhibition Honors Late Bloomington Artist Robert Harman’s Legacy

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — The life and work of the late Robert Harman, one of Bloomington’s most admired contemporary artists, will be celebrated in a new retrospective opening this fall.

Titled “Robert Harman: A Retrospective,” the exhibition will showcase more than five decades of Harman’s paintings, drawings, and mixed-media works. The show opens Nov. 7, 2025, at the Ivy Tech Waldron Arts Center, with a public reception from 5 to 8 p.m.

The exhibit will trace Harman’s evolution as an artist—from his early abstract explorations and socially engaged paintings to his later works blending realism, symbolism, and humor. The retrospective also highlights his influence as a mentor and educator, whose students and peers remember him as both technically skilled and deeply human in his approach to art.

Harman, who lived and worked in Bloomington for most of his career, was known for his sharp visual storytelling and willingness to address political and cultural themes. His art appeared in numerous group and solo shows throughout Indiana and beyond, often challenging viewers to reflect on power, identity, and the everyday experience.

Curators described the exhibition as both a celebration and a reflection. “Robert’s work carried an unmistakable honesty,” the announcement said. “He looked at the world with compassion, curiosity, and a willingness to confront its contradictions. This retrospective invites the community to reconnect with that spirit.”

The show will run through January 2026, featuring gallery talks, a panel discussion on Harman’s impact on regional art, and the publication of a catalog documenting his life and career.

The Ivy Tech Waldron Arts Center is located at 122 S. Walnut St. in Bloomington, and gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.
