NC GOP’s new congressional map raises concerns about representation

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — North Carolina’s new congressional map – set to be approved by state lawmakers next week – will likely shake up representation in eastern North Carolina. Democrats appear to be already planning their response.

In the new version released Thursday, state Republican leaders carved up eastern NC’s Black voting “bloc.”

“It makes the first district, less racially diverse. Fewer Black people will be in the first congressional district under the new map than the old map,” said Western Carolina Professor Chris Cooper. ‘You know, obviously, those voters have to go somewhere. And so, they are then sorted into the third district.”

Republicans see the change as an opportunity to gain a seat in Congress to more easily pass President Donald Trump’s agenda, an agenda they argue North Carolina supports since the president won the state in 2024.

Once the map is approved, Don Davis, the Democrat who currently represents the first district, will have to decide his next steps. He said on X that he is “considering every option.”

Davis’ leader in the House, U.S. Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, seems to be leaning toward having Davis run in the third district to unseat Republican Greg Murphy. Murphy’s district will be more racially diverse under the new map.

“We’re going to make sure that representative Don Davis is reelected in North Carolina, and Democrats are going to take back control of the House of Representatives,” said Jeffries during a briefing with reporters this week.

It is also expected that groups like the ACLU and the NAACP will sue if the map is approved. They will argue the new map will not allow for a majority minority district and will fail to give Black voters the ability to pick the candidate of their choice, as is guaranteed by the Voting Rights Act.

State lawmakers will start voting on the new map on Monday.
