Lafayette artist pays tribute to Charlie Kirk with portrait
Meehan plans to present the portrait to Kirk’s family at a Turning Point USA event in Baton Rouge on Oct. 27, where he will also distribute free prints.
“I just bought the most expensive canvas I could afford that day,” Meehan said, describing his spontaneous decision to paint the portrait. “I wanted to paint something that [Kirk’s daughter] could see and be happy.”
Meehan was deeply affected by Kirk’s assassination and felt compelled to create a tribute that captured Kirk’s spirit and personality. To achieve this, he watched extensive footage of Kirk and his Turning Point USA events.
“The biggest thing I could take away from it is that he was a good person,” Meehan said. “He idolized Jesus Christ as a Christian should and tried his best to live as he taught.”
Meehan began working on the painting during an art walk in Downtown Lafayette, just days after Kirk’s death. He aimed to make the painting as perfect as possible, even incorporating elements of Kirk’s spirituality into the frame.
“I said, Well, what would Jesus do? And then a light bulb,” Meehan explained. “Jesus was a carpenter. So with leftovers, scraps, and even the paint itself, I built this frame. I’ve never built a frame before. And I love it. It’s all one piece.”
Meehan expressed his hope that the portrait would bring some joy and solace to Kirk’s family.
“I want this to be with his family,” Meehan said. “I hope this brings them some joy, some solace, and just some good.”
Meehan’s heartfelt tribute to Charlie Kirk reflects his admiration for the late activist and his desire to offer comfort to Kirk’s family during a difficult time.
Prints as well as commissioned art pieces can also be done by Meehan, reaching him at (337)441-8142
