57-year-old again sentenced to life for 1986 murder

A 57-year-old man has again been sentenced to life in prison in connection with the 1986 rape and murder of Nancy Daugherty, WDIO reports.

Michael Carbo was first indicted by a grand jury in 2022 after genetic genealogy pointed to him as a suspect based on DNA evidence left at the scene. He was convicted later that year and sentenced to life in prison.

In 2024, the Minnesota Supreme Court awarded Carbo a new trial, stating that he should have been allowed to present limited evidence of an alternative perpetrator.

The second jury trial was conducted in January, and Carbo was again found guilty.

Carbo initially denied knowing Daugherty, but during the second trial claimed that he must have had a consensual sexual encounter with her despite not having any memory of it.
