WATCH: Football game at Ben Lomond High holds moment of silence for murdered student among increased police presence
Mason Caballero was shot and killed while sitting in a car near Ben Lomond High School on October 7. Other students brought him back to the school in an attempt to get him help, but he died from his wounds. A suspect in the murder, Isaias Emanuel Carranza, was later identified and arrested on October 11.
On October 15, Ben Lomond High School played a home football against Ogden High School, and a moment of silence was held in Mason’s honor. It was observed by players, students, and fans from both schools. Players from both teams stood in a line on the field, and each player stood next to players from the other team.
The touching moment was contrasted for many by an increased police presence at the school, as there were snipers on the school roof during the game. Those officers were reportedly there to provide reassurance to the community.
Director of communications with Ogden School District Jer Bates told ABC4 that there was “absolutely no threat of danger whatsoever.”
“We have an enhanced law enforcement presence at the game to provide reassurance to our community,” Bates said. “Here at the game, everything is operating exactly as normal for students and fans.”
