North Logan City could soon be renamed
NORTH LOGAN, Utah (ABC4) — Before North Logan was incorporated in 1934, it was called Greenville, which was settled in 1890. City officials say the current name often causes confusion and even costs the city tax revenue, so they are looking into what it would take to change the name and the benefits that would come with it.

With mountain views, open farmlands and around12,000 people who call it home, North Logan is a quaint city, and it could soon go by a different name. “This is kind of the starting off point where we say, ‘Is it worth walking down this path?’” Mayor Lyndsay Peterson told ABC4.

“It’s kind of now or never, so it was instigated by the council itself,” added the mayor. “And then, we started to have those conversations with the lieutenant governor’s office and with those consultants to say, ‘What would this actually look like?’”

Peterson said the city can look into this right now thanks to some funds that are for economic development. The reason behind looking into it? “To sum it up simply, we’re not collecting the taxes we should be collecting.” She explained that this is especially true in terms of sales tax. “That money goes back to the state and then the state allocates that. A lot of that is done based on zip code and we share our zip code with a portion of Logan.”

The issue is more complicated when it comes to collecting taxes from online sales. “Anything like amazon that should come back to where the seller and purchaser originated and they’re just not always coming back,” stated Peterson.

The mayor said it would be almost impossible to determine just how large the losses are in terms of tax revenue.

Throughout the process, the city will host public meetings to get the community’s opinion and recently conducted an informal poll to get an idea of what that is looking like at this time. “Fifty-six percent support Greenville, 32 percent support North Logan, and 12 percent support some other name other than North Logan,” Mayor Peterson stated. “So, to me, that’s a signal that it’s at least worth having that conversation.”

If the name is changed, the city already has a budget to replace most of its signage (like street signs), which is out of date and displays the old logo. Those signs that are scheduled to be updated will not be replaced until a decision is made.

There is no official timeline for when a decision could be made because the city is in the beginning stages of the process, but it could take up to a year.
