Thanks to one Merced family, however, this year the season’s frights and sights are open to all.
This is Sandra Goff-Hubbell’s third year decorating, and her first year offering sensory-friendly nights.
“[It’s] a time when we tone down the lights and sounds so that everyone, regardless of sensory needs, can enjoy the decorations comfortably,” she said.
The idea came from her own experience with her family and was created with the help of her daughter.
“We have a child on the spectrum who has sensory sensitivities, so we know firsthand how overwhelming some Halloween displays can be. In the past, we’ve had to skip events or leave early because of things like loud sounds, flashing lights, or sudden jump scares, which can be overwhelming.
“Seeing how many families might be in the same situation, wanting to take part in the fun but needing a calmer environment, we thought we would offer something different,” she said.
The lights and displays will be on every night until 11 p.m. at 2861 El Camino Real in Merced. Sensory-Friendly nights will run every Wednesday until Halloween, starting Oct. 15.
