Pritzker said it was to hear their views on the Trump administration’s attempts to militarize American cities.
Some of the officials were apart of National Securities Leaders for America — a bipartisan volunteer organization made up of retired servicemembers.
The consensus among those in the room was clear — they condemned National Guard deployments without the consent of state and local government.
After making his case once againt against the deployment of troops on the streets of Chicago, Pritzker invited the former military officials to the podium.
“We strongly support the governor’s efforts to stop the misuse of our military members against our fellow Americans,” said a former military official.
Another retired military leader said, “Our military and National Guard are designed for combat, not for community policing,”
This comes at a time where the Trump administration is looking to send the National Guard to more cities.
In an Oval Office meeting Wednesday, Trump floated the idea around of sending troops to San Francisco.
