Evangeline, Vermilion parishes announce burn bans, effective immediately

(KLFY) — Two more parishes in Acadiana have announced burn bans.

Evangeline Parish and Vermilion Parish have each announced bans effective today, and until further notice.

The two join Acadia and St. Landry parishes, which previously announced bans. Evangeline Parish had issued a ban Sept. 18 which was later rescinded.

Mark Poche, president of the Vermilion Parish Police Jury, said agricultural burning is still allowed as long as the activity is controlled, monitored and “conducted in accordance with safety guidelines,” and cooking fires contained to grills or fire pits are also exempted.

“Open burning of vegetation, debris, yard waste, brush and similar combustible material is prohibited within all areas of Vermilion Parish not otherwise exempted,” Poche said.

Evangeline Parish Police Jury President Kevin Veillon said the ban there “includes anything with an open flame that has the potential to create an ember,” but also exempts cooking fires, contained campfires and controlled agricultural burns.

A total of 14 parishes statewide are currently under burn bans, as of 10 a.m. today.
