The reopening of the Stellantis plant is expected to bring economic benefits to the community, but it also highlights a significant issue: the current housing inventory is at record lows, which may not meet the anticipated demand.
“I think overall it’s going to be good for the community, but it’s going to put some strain on the housing market and higher demand, which we don’t have the supply for,” said Nick Carter, a realtor with Keller Williams Realty Signature.
Carter, a former employee of the assembly plant, understands the challenges faced by those looking for housing. “Real estate agents are just going to be, you know, searching high and low for homes that just aren’t there. The housing supply is inadequate enough to fill the demand,” he explained.
Carter noted the difficulty for plant workers who will be working long hours to launch a new vehicle, leaving them with limited time to search for housing.
“The biggest struggle is going to be when you’re on a limited time basis, because you’re putting in a lot of hours to launch a new vehicle for the upcoming year. It doesn’t leave you a lot of time to search for housing,” he said.
Belvidere Mayor Clinton Morris emphasized the importance of sustainable growth for the community.
“I want jobs here in this community, I want growth. It has to be the right kind of growth. It has to be something that supports taxpayers so that we can afford to provide services,” Morris stated.
Despite the challenges, Carter expressed optimism about the plant’s reopening. “I think we’re all happy about it. You know, we love to see the growth in the area. We love to see the jobs in the area and I think most of us in the industry are pretty excited about it,” he said.
