In a Facebook post, UCPD reported that the hamburglars broke into the freezer at the Union City Community Help Center — a nonprofit organization that sells quality used items to disadvantaged Hoosiers in the area at a discounted rate.
UCPD indicated that its investigation into the hamburglars’ alleged actions began when its officers received a report that indicated a “significant” amount of meat had been stolen from the community center freezer. Police reported that the following were stolen from the freezer:
Police quickly identified the two suspects during their investigation. In compliance with company policy, FOX59/CBS4 is withholding the suspects’ identities until the exact nature of the charges they face is known.
UCPD indicated that its officers “grilled” the suspects in interviews that were conducted. That grilling, according to UCPD, led to both hamburglars confessing to the alleged crimes.
“The duo didn’t wear striped shirts or carry cartoon hamburgers, but the resemblance to the infamous McDonald’s Hamburglar was uncanny — right down to the appetite for beef,” UCPD officials wrote in their Facebook post.
Police have also discovered that one of the alleged hamburglars “may have had his hands in more than just the freezer.” UCPD believes the suspect in question also played a role in a string of recent vehicle break-ins.
“Apparently, when he wasn’t on a beef binge, he was out trying to pick up a few ‘side dishes’ from unlocked cars,” UCPD officials wrote.
FOX59/CBS4 has checked court records to see exactly what charges the alleged hamburglars might face. As of 4:15 p.m. Wednesday, formal charges in the case had not been filed.
UCPD has indicated that it has closed the case of the stolen community center meat.
“This was definitely not a happy meal for them,” UCPD officials wrote. “They thought they could beef with the law, but we caught them before things got too rare.”
