Repeat offenders, new units, and a safer Charlotte? What CMPD’s new data reveals

CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) – Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police released its third-quarter public safety report on Wednesday, highlighting several encouraging trends.

From January through September 2025, CMPD said overall crime in Charlotte has dropped 8% compared to the same time last year, with a 20% decrease in violent offenses.

Crime Statistics

According to CMPD’s report, the City of Charlotte has seen decreases in areas:

  • Homicides down 24% (62 so far in 2025 vs. 82 in 2024)
  • Aggravated assaults down 19%
  • Robberies dropped by 22%
  • Property crimes declined 5% overall
  • Vehicle thefts dropped, from 5,850 in 2024 to 4,627 this year

While some crimes, like commercial burglaries and vehicle larcenies, saw increases, CMPD leaders said the overall trend in 2025 is positive.

Proactive Policing

CMPD’s report also highlighted an increase in proactive law enforcement efforts:

  • Officer-initiated efforts up 18%
  • Firearm seizures increased by 25%
  • Arrests rose by 15%

CMPD said Crime Reduction Units have made an impact, assisting with over 1,250 traffic stops, 450 arrests, and seizing 282 firearms and over 80 pounds of narcotics since July 2025.

New Initiatives

CMPD acknowledged that public perception doesn’t always align with the data.

“Data alone cannot capture the real impact crime has on victims and their families. While overall and violent crime have both declined significantly, if you are the victim of a crime or know someone who has been victimized, it can shape your perception of safety in Charlotte,” Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said in its released report.

To address this, CMPD has launched two initiatives:

  • Entertainment District Unit: Focused on improving safety in Uptown and South End nightlife areas through high-visibility patrols
  • CROWN Culture Initiative: Aims to rebuild public confidence through strong police presence and community collaboration

Repeat Offenders

While crime is down overall, CMPD officials said “repeat offenders” are driving many of the city’s crimes.

“We continue to see a troubling pattern: a disproportionate number of violent incidents and property crimes are being committed by individuals with extensive criminal histories,” Sergeant Todd Martin said in a released statement. “The cycle of catch and release does not reduce crime in our community.”

CMPD went on to state, “Inconsistent accountability for repeat offenders, both adults and juveniles, undermines community safety and places an undue burden on victims, neighborhoods, and law enforcement resources. Public safety remains a community-wide effort.”

Community Involvement

CMPD is urging folks to take simple safety measures, such as locking their cars, securing their valuables, and removing firearms from their vehicles. They’re also encouraging residents to report suspicious activity by calling 911 or Charlotte Crime Stoppers.

CMPD said their Connect Charlotte program also allows residents and businesses to register or integrate their security cameras to support investigations and enhance safety.
