Pop musician Carnie Wilson talks mental, physical health

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — In the early 1990’s, the pop trio Wilson Phillips was one of the biggest groups around with multiple number one hits including, “Hold On,” “Release Me,” “You’re in Love,” “The Dream is Still Alive,” and “You Won’t See Me Cry.”

In recent years, Wilson Phillips, which includes Carnie Wilson, Chynna Phillips and Carnie’s sister, Wendy Wilson have visited Louisiana several times to perform.

Of the members of Wilson Phillips, Carnie Wilson stopped by to talk to WGNO’s Kenny Lopez about her latest endeavor.

Wilson’s latest endeavor is her desire to help those struggling with mental health.

“We got to take care of ourselves and it’s not just physically, it’s mentally too. I want to look more at it. I’ve looked at it over my life, and I’ve gone through many things. I had postpartum depression. I always struggled with chronic low depression, but really anxiety, my Achilles heel is anxiety,” she said.

Wilson’s in New Orleans to bring awareness to her Neurocrine Biosciences campaign called, “Connecting with Carnie,” in which she is helping those struggling with tardive dyskinesia.

“800,000 people have it in this country. It’s a condition associated with certain mental health medications, antipsychotic medication,” Wilson said.

“Tardive dyskinesia can affect your tongue, your jaw, head, torso, it’s uncontrollable movements,” Wilson said.

“Talk to your doctors, see what your symptoms are. Face the stigma, erase the stigma, stand up to that stigma,” she said.

It’s easy to feel a connection to Carnie Wilson. She talks about her connection with her dad Brian Wilson, from The Beach Boys, who died earlier this year.

“He taught me the introduction to ‘California Girls’ on the piano, which is one of the best intros ever,” she said.
