NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Orleans Justice Center escapee, Derrick Groves, who was recently recaptured in Atlanta, was arraigned on Wednesday, Oct. 15.
Officials with the office of Attorney General Liz Murrill reported Groves pled not guilty to simple escape via Zoom call from Angola Prison.
On Oct. 8, Groves was involved in an alleged standoff with Atlanta police after law enforcement received a tip of his location at home in southwest Atlanta. He returned to Louisiana on Friday, Oct. 10.
Through a coordinated effort with Crimestoppers Greater New Orleans, the United States Marshals Service, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Homeland Security Investigations, Louisiana State Police, the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office, the New Orleans Police Department, the Atlanta Police Department, and other federal, state, and local law enforcement the 28-year-old was apprehended.
Groves was the last of 10 escaped inmates to be recaptured.
“We will ensure he is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” said Murrill.
A discovery hearing is set for Oct. 30.
