Around 12:30 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 9, officers were doing routine supervision when they found Byron Leach unresponsive in his cell for an apparent suicide attempt. Officers and medical staff attempted life-saving efforts and were able to restore a pulse before taking him to the hospital; however, he later succumbed to his injuries.
Officials said Leach was arrested hours earlier, on October 8, at a residence in Charlotte by US Marshals serving warrants obtained during an ongoing child sexual assault investigation by the Marshville Police Department.
During the arrest, Leach reportedly tried to escape by jumping from a balcony, which injured his arm. After he was released, he was booked just before 7 p.m. on charges related to the sexual assault of a child, approximately 5.5 hours before he took his own life.
The Sheriff’s Office said he was house alone at the time of the incident due to his injury. It is being investigated as an in-custody death by the NCSBI.
