According to police, the incident happened around 4:40 a.m. along the tracks near the 100 block of West 79th Street, in Grand Crossing.
Chicago police said the victim, a 44-year-old man, was riding the train when he forced open the doors and exited the train while it was moving.
After jumping from the train car, the victim came into contact with the electrified third rail.
Officers say the victim was later pronounced dead on the scene.
A death investigation is now underway and autopsy results are currently pending.
The incident led to some delays for commuters ahead of rush hour on Tuesday morning after it halted Red Line trains in the area.
According to the CTA, Red Line service was temporarily suspended between 95th/Dan Ryan and Garfield due the incident on the tracks at 79th/Dan Ryan.
As a result of the incident, Red Line trains are only operating between Howard and Garfield currently.
To accommodate passengers, the CTA is providing shuttle buses between 95th/Dan Ryan and Garfield.
Additionally, the CTA suggests riders consider alternative options, including the nearby bus routes #29 to State, #75 to 75th and #79 to 79th.
Currently, it is unclear how long delays are expected to last.
