Louisiana BESE reduces state tests for high school students

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — Policy changes approved by the Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) Wednesday will reduce the number of state tests for high school students.

The Louisiana Department of Education said students will take four state assessments instead of six and one comprehensive exam instead of two for English language arts and math at the end of 10th grade.

“This surgical approach reduces testing while maintaining the validity and rigor of these vital assessments,” said State Superintendent Cade Brumley. “It shows we can listen to our educators, improve the system, and uphold high expectations.”

The policy change is part of other changes made in state testing.

  • October 2024: Testing time for English language arts and math was reduced by 20% for third to eighth-grade students.
  • March 2025: Social studies testing reduced by 50% for third to eighth-grade students.
