Como Park Zoo welcomes 2 Hartmann Mountain zebras
On Tuesday, the Como Zoo announced that they have welcomed a father and son zebra to live at their premises, named Khomas and Keanu.
The zebras came from the Franklin Park Zoo in Boston and are the Hartmann Mountain subspecies, which is a “hardy” type of zebra that is native to the mountainous areas of southwestern Africa. They are usually taller and heavier than the type of zebras people are used to seeing at zoos. They thrive in cooler, drier climates.
The father zebra, Khomas, is 7 years old and weighs 825 pounds, while his son, 1-year-old Keanu, is about 550 pounds.
The pair is living with the zoo’s 25-year-old Plains zebra, Ulysses. The zoo said the initial introduction between the animals went well, and the animals appear to be relaxed and content.
“We introduced the zebras right away because, in theory, all three males are unbonded and naturally seek to form a herd,” said Senior Zookeeper Jill Erzar in a statement.
Though they are not the only zebras at Como Zoo.
