CMS leaders consider new AI policy guidelines
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Charlotte-Mecklenburg School officials are considering new policy guidelines for the use of artificial intelligence in education.
The discussion was held during Tuesday night’s Board of Education meeting.
The district would use the new technology to help teachers, employees, and students with learning. It also sets guidelines for appropriate AI use as well as student data protection.
Speakers at the meeting say protections are vital, especially because of the growing concern about AI’s effect on mental health. One speaker also noted the potential “hallucinations,” the incorrect or misleading results that AI can generate.
“I believe students must explicitly be taught what hallucinations look like and how easily they can appear even in trusted tools,” Nandhana Ramesh said.
Speaker Kyle Queen adds, “The primary facts to be acknowledged in our AI policy are the increasing difficulty in discerning truth online and the commercial data mining of our personhoods.”
Tuesday night’s public hearing was informational. Board members will make a decision on the AI policy at a future meeting.
