PHENIX CITY Ala. (WRBL) — State investigators are working to determine what caused a deadly house fire that claimed the lives of four family members late Monday night in Phenix City.

Alabama State Fire Marshals were on the scene Tuesday investigating the blaze that killed 77-year-old Willey Chappell, 70-year-old Sarah Chappell, 40-year-old Vantice Williams and 6-year-old Paradise Williams. Family members also confirmed that the family’s dog died in the fire.

Russell County Coroner Arthur Sumbry Jr. said the possible cause of death was smoke inhalation inside the home.

All four victims were pronounced dead at 8:31 p.m. on Monday.

Initially, a heavy law enforcement presence was reported Monday night on Wehring Lane and Prince Drive in Phenix City.

The Russell County Coroner, along with Sheriff’s Office vehicles, Phenix City Police, and Fire Rescue units, responded to the scene Monday night.

Agents with the Alabama State Fire Marshal’s Office have not released additional details about the investigation, which includes whether the home had working smoke detectors.
