Trump floats use of Insurrection Act to deploy military in Chicago

(WTVO) — President Donald Trump on Monday suggested he could invoke the Insurrection Act to address violent crime in Chicago, saying he’s “allowed” to use the law but hasn’t done so yet because he’s confident in his legal appeals.

“I’m allowed to use the Insurrection Act,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One. “I’m not going to go there yet, because I’m winning on appeal. You’re right. We’re losing with radical left judges, generally, radical left judges, and we’re winning on appeal. So we’ll see what happens.”

Trump made the remarks while returning from a Middle East peace summit focused on ending the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza and securing the release of hostages. During the flight, he fielded questions from the press, including about public safety back home.

The president’s plan to deploy the National Guard in Chicago was blocked last week. About 500 Guard members from Illinois and Texas had been activated, but an emergency motion to lift a temporary restraining order issued by a district judge was denied by an appeals court over the weekend. The case has yet to be decided on its merits.

Trump criticized Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker, saying the Democrat should “beg” for federal help.

“I think he should beg for help because he’s running a bad operation,” Trump said. “He’s letting people be killed in his city because he doesn’t want [help], in Chicago, and I love Chicago. And Chicago can be a great city again, and very quickly. I would have Chicago cleaned out.”

He pointed to his previous use of the National Guard in Washington, D.C., as a model for what could be done in Chicago.

“Pritzker should ask me to do it,” Trump said. “One of you mentioned Insurrection Act. I could do that and many presidents have.”

He added that past presidents have used the law “because they don’t want to go through this stuff where somebody said there’s not crime and 4,000 people got shot.”

Asked whether he wants governors to take a tougher stance on crime, Trump replied, “I want it to be stronger and tougher and not allow us to have record-breaking crime.”
