Poll: More than half of polled voters believe Indiana is on ‘wrong track’ politically

INDIANAPOLIS — A new Indiana poll from a nonprofit organization found that more than half of polled voters believe the state is on the wrong track politically.

According to a news release from Independent Indiana, 53% of Indiana registered voters who participated in the poll expressed dissatisfaction with the state’s political leadership and direction.

The poll was commissioned by Independent Indiana and conducted by North Star Opinion Research earlier this month. The research company polled 604 Indiana registered voters and had a margin of error of ±3.99%

According to previous reports, Independent Indiana is a nonpartisan nonprofit organization that aims to “return competitive elections to the state of Indiana.” The group released an additional poll earlier this month that found a majority of polled Hoosiers opposed state redistricting efforts mid-decade.

When asked if respondents would say that Indiana is “heading in the right direction, or have things gotten off the wrong track,” the poll collected the following results:

All

  • 34% – right direction
  • 53% – wrong track

Republicans

  • 63% – right direction
  • 26% – wrong track

Independents

  • 28% – right direction
  • 57% – wrong track

Democrats

  • 15% – right direction
  • 80% – wrong track

Through the poll, respondents were also asked their opinions on the following political figures:

President Donald Trump

Sponsored
  • 42% – favorable
  • 49% – unfavorable
  • 9% – no opinion

Indiana Gov. Mike Braun

  • 24% – favorable
  • 43% – unfavorable
  • 22% – no opinion
  • 11% – never heard of

Indiana Secretary of State Diego Morales

  • 5% – favorable
  • 17% – unfavorable
  • 21% – no opinion
  • 57% – never heard of

“Indiana voters are clearly frustrated — with their leaders, with both parties, and with the lack of meaningful choices in our elections,” Nathan Gotsch, the executive director of Independent Indiana, said in the release. “To the Hoosiers who feel disappointed or disillusioned by the state of politics in our state: you’re not alone.”

Respondents also expressed their dissatisfaction with both the Indiana Republican Party and the Indiana Democratic Party in the poll:

Indiana Republican Party

  • 33% – favorable
  • 45% – unfavorable
  • 20% – no opinion
  • 2% – never heard of

Indiana Democratic Party

  • 25% – favorable
  • 43% – unfavorable
  • 27% – no opinion
  • 5% – never heard of

“These results show that Hoosiers are increasingly fed up with a system that limits competition and rewards extremism,” Gotsch added. “Redistricting is just the latest example, but it’s clear that voter frustration has been building for a long time.”
