In January, more than 16,000 Portlanders used ranked choice voting to choose the top names for five of the city’s 56 snowplows. This comes after PBOT held the city’s first-ever snowplow naming contest in 2024.
The five snowplows will boast decals bearing their names and can be tracked in real-time on PBOT’s Winter Weather Center when activated for winter weather. Each named snowplow will cover a different route, according to PBOT.

Below is a list of the winning snowplow names and their routes.
According to the bureau, PBOT crews practice driving snowplows every October on an obstacle course – offering a chance for new drivers to train and experienced drivers to sharpen their snowplow skills. Crews also join classroom-style training and prep equipment so it’s ready in case of emergency.
During winter weather, PBOT crews work to keep vital public transit lines and emergency routes open, the bureau said, noting snowplow drivers work 12-hour shifts to keep streets navigable for first responders, TriMet and Portland Streetcar operators.
According to PBOT, crews work to provide at least one passable lane in each direction so routes are accessible for vehicles with front-wheel drive or traction devices can get through.
PBOT encourages Portlanders to create an emergency plan for winter weather, such as arranging plans to work from home or take public transit in order to keep roads clear for emergency responders.
Officials also suggest Portlanders create a checklist for their homes, businesses and vehicles. This includes keeping ice melt and shovels to clear sidewalks and driveways and warning others of overhead dangers on your property such as falling snow or ice, trees or powerlines.
PBOT also recommends taking steps to prevent landslides if homes or businesses in the area are prone to them – especially in the West Hills and higher elevations on Portland’s east side and keeping ditches, culverts and trash racks clear of debris that could impact runoff.
The bureau further encourages Portlanders to carry snow chains or other traction devices for vehicles at minimum along with an emergency weather kit.
