It happened shortly before 7 a.m. Monday morning off Barclay Downs Drive. People who live at the Hazel Apartments describe the area as quiet and told Queen City News they generally feel very safe here.
“I see SouthPark as a very safe place,” said Amy Koury, a resident. “In the time I’ve lived here, I’ve felt very comfortable. It was definitely a huge shock, especially coming from my own building.”
It’s why they were so surprised when they came outside Monday morning and saw crime scene tape and police cars in the parking deck.
“I woke up to walk my dog,” said William Phillips, a resident. “I came out and there were like eight police cars. I saw something was going on. I didn’t know what and then some guy told me down the street.”
Investigators had been outside Phillips’ apartment complex for a couple of hours before he came outside and saw the police presence.
“Surprised,” he said. “Definitely surprised. Unexpected to hear something like that in this area.”
That’s the general consensus of residents after learning a woman had been shot and killed near the Hazel Apartments. They said they believe the shooting happened in the parking garage.
“I was approached by an individual who said he was a first responder and he found somebody on the ground bleeding, who was unfortunately not alive at the time he found her,” said Koury.
Authorities haven’t released any information about the victim, but people we talked with believe she lived at the complex. We’re working to learn if officers are looking for a suspect or have someone in custody. We’ve also asked if this was domestic violence-related.
It’s worth noting, people living nearby say the parking garage is secure.
“You have to have a key fob to access the garage,” said Koury. “It’s usually pretty locked down.”
Even so, these neighbors will keep an extra close eye when leaving their units.
“I’m definitely going to be more cognizant of walking alone at night and making sure I’m aware of my surroundings,” said Koury.
Officers emphasized this is a very active investigation. They’re asking anyone with information to contact police.
