CHICAGO — Charges have been filed against a man accused of hitting and injuring a woman in a DUI crash outside of a suburban Walmart last week.

Joliet police say Herbert Hume, a 36-year-old Joliet resident, has been charged with four counts of aggravated DUI and two counts of aggravated battery in connection with the crash.

Police said the crash allegedly unfolded on Tuesday, Oct. 7, in a Walmart parking lot in the 2400 block of West Jefferson Street.

According to the police, Hume allegedly struck and seriously injured a 74-year-old woman in the parking lot. Shortly after the crash, officers said he allegedly attempted to drive away, but was stopped by several bystanders who had stepped in to assist the victim.

Deputies now believe that Hume may have been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.

Traffic investigators obtained an arrest warrant for Hume on Friday and he was taken into custody on Monday afternoon.

Authorities have not provided an update on the victim’s condition.
