Doug Lebda, the company’s chairman and chief executive officer, died in an all-terrain vehicle accident on his family farm. He was 55, and founded the online financial platform in 1996.
“The Board of Directors and the entire LendingTree management team deeply mourns his passing and extends sincere and heartfelt condolences to his family,” the company said in the announcement.
The Board of Directors issued the following statement:
We are deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Doug. Doug was a visionary leader whose relentless drive, innovation and passion transformed the financial services landscape, touching the lives of millions of consumers. …
Doug’s unwavering commitment to our team, customers and partners shaped LendingTree’s culture and values and permanently changed the way in which consumers access financial products. His passion will continue to inspire us as we move forward together. We extend our deepest sympathies to Doug’s family and loved ones during this difficult time. …
We are committed to upholding his legacy and continuing the work he began with passion, integrity and dedication.
Ledba lived with his family in Charlotte’s Quail Hollow neighborhood. The family is working on funeral arrangements.
Lebda’s wife, Megan, wrote the following on her late husband:
“It is impossible to capture the depth of who Doug was and what he meant to all of us. He was an amazing man with a heart so big it seemed to have room for everyone he met. Doug was compassionate, generous, and endlessly curious about the world and the people around him. He made friends everywhere he went. His energy was magnetic, his smile contagious, and his presence was a source of comfort and inspiration. …
“Our hearts are broken, but we are also deeply grateful for the love and support that has poured in from across the world. Doug’s legacy will continue in the company he built, the lives he touched, and the example he set for all of us to lead with kindness, courage, and compassion.”
LendingTree moved into its current South End headquarters in 2021.
Former governor and Charlotte mayor Pat McCrory also offered condolences:
“I have lost a true friend and North Carolina has lost one of America’s greatest entrepreneurs. Doug Lebda could have put the headquarters of Lending Tree anywhere in the nation, but he selected Charlotte to be his home. We are so fortunate to have known his passion and heart.”
Scott Peyree, the LendingTree’s chief operating officer and president, has been appointed by the board to serve as president and CEO, effective immediately.
Lead Independent Director Steve Ozonian, has been appointed by the board to serve as the chairman. Ozonian joined the Board in 2008.
