LDS Church to make ‘worldwide’ announcement, to announce new President

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints said they will be making a ‘worldwide announcement’ on Tuesday.

They said they will be talking about the reorganization of a new First Presidency of the Church. This live announcement will be made from Temple Square in Salt Lake City and and ABC4 will be streaming the announcement LIVE here.

“Jesus Christ leads His Church through a prophet, who serves as the President of the Church, and two Apostles who are called to be the prophet’s counselors, forming the First Presidency,” the Church said in a press release.

As explained by The Church, “The Church is led by the First Presidency, which includes the Prophet and two counselors. The First Presidency is supported by the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. Together, these leaders supervise the entire work of the Church.”

The process of succession

Traditionally, it is the most senior Apostle of the Church who becomes president. Which means that Elder Dallin H. Oaks, former First Counselor in the First Presidency, is set to be the next Prophet. Oaks is presently 93 years of age and will have to be voted on and sustained by members of the Quorum of the Twelve before that is official.

After a President is named, he will select his counselors and then be set apart. To fill the vacancy left by the succession process, a new apostle will also be called.
